New Testament Lesson: 1 Corinthians 12:3-13
3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
Leader: The word of God for people of God.
People: Thanks be to God.
Sermon: About the Gifts You Received from God
Today is the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit. It is a gift that cannot be separated when referring to the Holy Spirit. So this morning, my sermon focuses on gifts. The Greek word 'charisma' means 'a gift given freely' and 'a gift of grace.' It refers to the functions given as a gift from God. The Scripture text, 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 says, “To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.”
Nine gifts appear here as follows; a message of wisdom, a message of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in different kinds of tongues, and the interpretation of tongues.
'A message of wisdom' refers to the practical ability to apply God's Word to the field of life. ‘A message of Knowledge' refers to the intellectual capacity to understand and teach the Word of God. 'Faith' refers to the ability to use Christ's power specifically. It is the ability to break through hardships and difficulties, such as our corona crisis. 'Gifts of healing' refers to the ability to cure a disease. It is the ability to heal each condition to make the gospel effective. 'Miraculous powers' refers to the ability to cause many miracles other than healing. 'Prophecy' refers to the ability to know God's revelation and foretell about the future. 'Distinguishing between spirits' refers to the ability to discern the lessons and history of evil spirits and the ability to judge hidden sins. 'Speaking in different kinds of tongues' is the ability to speak for spiritual fellowship in a way that you cannot understand. 'Interpretation in tongues' refers to the ability to interpret dialects that cannot catch in words that others can understand.
Romans 12:6-8 speaks of gifts besides, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” Six gifts are prophecy, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, and showing mercy.
The Scripture text of this morning tells gifts that appeared in the Corinthian Church at that time, mainly mysterious gifts, and Romans12:6-8 focus on the Roman church and mainly personal gifts. So we can say that Gifts vary by region and time. Today, we still live in a variety of gifts.
Various gifts can classify three categories. The first is educational gifts; knowledge, wisdom, teaching, counseling, and leading. The second is volunteer gifts, serving, hospitality, and showing mercy. The third is competent gifts; faith, evangelism, prayer, prophecy, 'speaking in different kinds of tongues, interpretation in languages, distinguishing between spirits, gifts of healing, and miraculous powers.
I told you the gift is a gift from the Holy Spirit. It gives for the benefit of personal faith and the ministry of the church community. It provides for good, so there are certain conditions. First, there must be the desire of the recipient. Gifts come to those who yearn, so we must dream. I want you to be eager for the gift. Second, you have to find it. When God sends you to this world, he has hidden the gift that will act for the mission. Therefore, I pray that you will discover the potential gifts as the Lord's servants.
Third, we need to develop it from the inner heart. In some cases, gifts are temporarily effective supernaturally, but in many cases, they gradually appear through training. If you feel the need for the talent for community you love, or if there is something you see in your ministry, you need to practice it.
Fourth, it would be best if you used it. Even if a gift comes to you, it will be nothing if you do not use it. It must be used and refined with the permission of the community. Fifth, moderation is also necessary. Gifts are ultimately for the work of the church community, so they must stop when there is no virtue or adverse reaction to the work.
Therefore, we need to know that the Holy Spirit's gift may be damaging to the church and be careful not to use it. First, verse 11 says, "All these are the work of the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines." So no matter what position, job, or gift you have, you shouldn't be more proud than others. Conversely, you should not have an inferiority complex. 1 Peter 4:10 commands us. "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." It is a golden rule about gifts in the church. Please keep in mind.
Second, gifts can come by evil spirits and sometimes by the Holy Spirit. Even the gifts given by the Holy Spirit can misuse for sinful nature or evil spirits along the way. Doing so can be devastating and not beneficial to your faith or the ministry of the church community. Therefore, we must always strive to discern while developing or utilizing gifts. Jesus Christ sent the Holy Spirit and the human spirit that believes in Jesus to gain salvation, so those who deny it are not the Holy Spirit's work. Third, it is not the work of the Holy Spirit that violates the Bible. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit who works with the Word, works in the Word, and leads into it. Lessons, contrary to the Bible, are not the work of the Holy Spirit.
My brothers and sisters in Christ! The church community is the body of Christ. Its head is Christ. Therefore, the church and the congregations must exist for Christ and follow Christ. We must live only for Jesus Christ and be the follower of Christ. As a part of the community, we must worship, associate, serve, and devote ourselves to Jesus Christ. Let Christ rule the church. We must not let our greed dominate our church.
My brothers and sisters in Christ! The church community is one who has received one Holy Spirit. 'Baptism' means 'washing' and 'purifying.'
The baptism of the Holy Spirit refers to being washed away by the Holy Spirit. Holy baptism occurs when we believe in Jesus as our Savior. When you believe in Jesus, it is the moment of born again with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, who once came in when you buy, does not leave in you, the believer. The Holy Spirit confirms that we are the children of God within us, that we can understand sin, that we know God's Word, that we have faith and enthusiasm, and that we know the gifts necessary for ministry. We should believe in Jesus in the church community, receive salvation and gifts, and finally, we become one body in the Holy Spirit.
O, Spirit God of Pentecost comes to us in our present crisis. Raise and renew the life we have lost. Let's follow and obey the Holy Spirit's leadership, who is the comforter, wonderful counselor, and refuge in our pandemic crisis. Let's have flaming hot faith, gather every hope from every mouth, and share love one another in God. Thanks be to God. Amen.

Closing Hymn: This Is My Father’s World UMH 144 (1, 2)
1.This is my Father's world,
And to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres.
This is my Father's world:
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;
His hand the wonders wrought.
2.This is my Father's world,
The birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white,
Declare their maker's praise.
This is my Father's world,
He shines in all that's fair;
In the rustling grass I hear him pass;
He speaks to me everywhere.
May the blessing of almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
be with us now and forever. Amen.
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name;
you are mine.”

Dear leaders and congregations of Cuba City UMC,
Although none of us has a perfect manual for this public health risk of COVID 19, we as the church exist for such a time as this.
First and foremost, I wish you and your family good health, and pray that the peace of Almighty God will be with you in this situation.
What follows is my Ministry Plan for COVID 19 effective from this week.
This plan is intended to have us on the same page, to ensure critical ministry takes place, to help every congregation in church connection.
Ministry Plan for COVID 19 Emergency
1. Events & Building Closure:
-All in-person events, including worship, meals and other public gatherings, are suspended until further notice.
-The building and offices are closed.
-Staffs, unless ill, may access the building for necessary functions.
2. Plan for Communication
-We will utilize e-mail, Web-page (www.cubacityumc.org), SNS(if available), postal mail and telephone to connect with congregation & community. Please share any concerns and news with your pastor and congregation. We are helping and prayer community. Let’s be in connection by any possible communication tool and be the supporters one another.
Church Phone: 608-744-2538, church email:cubaumc@outlook,com
-We will collect all concerns and help-needed from congregations, and try to be helping hands as much as we can.
3. Plan for Spiritual Needs and Home Worship
-We are God's people and praying community of God. Let’s begin our prayer chain for all people. We utilized our prayer chain for urgent prayer requests. However, in this CORVID 19 emergency, I ask all congregations to pray for all other brothers and sisters in our church, community, and nation & world. We cannot meet in person but If possible, we can pray at the same time (at 8 AM and 8PM) in our different place.
-We will not make Sunday Worship service at the church until further notice. Because we have limitation to use online technology for all congregations, I will prepare a weekly news and messages for all to use for information and home worship service. It will be delivered to you by email or postal mail as you wish.
4. Plan for Children, Youth and Confirmation Class.
-We will not make ‘Wednesday Night Alive’ ‘Youth Program’ and ‘Confirmation Class’ until further notice.
-For the confirmation class, I ask all confirmation class students to study your text book according to our class schedule at home. And an important homework is to memorize what I assigned to you in class.
My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, all of you are precious God’s children to Cuba City UMC. I pray for your safety, health and wellness in God's care. Let’s keep in touch in healing power of Jesus Christ. Any ideas and recommendations to overcome this emergency is welcomed.
We will overcome this emergency situation in God’s Grace and Mercy.
God is always with you!
